Officers Guard IMC After Fatal Kearns Shooting — News

August 17, 2026 — Murray, Utah, USA: Law enforcement agencies from across the Salt Lake Valley converged on Intermountain Medical Center in Murray on Monday afternoon, temporarily restricting access and diverting ambulances after victims from a fatal shooting in Kearns were transported to the facility. Officials said the precautionary lockdown followed a violent altercation outside a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter‑day Saints meetinghouse at 4660 West and 5015 South in Kearns, where one person was killed and two others critically injured during a funeral service. Police later identified the suspect as a 17‑year‑old who allegedly opened fire after his father handed him a gun; the father, Afuhia Manatau, was arrested and charged with murder and felony discharge of a firearm. At the hospital, SWAT teams, snipers, and armored vehicles were deployed as officers worked to ensure safety amid heightened emotions from friends and family arriving to see the victims. Unified Police Assistant Chief Justin Hoyal said the response was “out of an abundance of caution” while investigators determined whether any threat remained. Intermountain spokesman Jess Gomez confirmed that the hospital entered a “Secure Campus Response,” canceling outpatient appointments and diverting emergency traffic until the situation stabilized. “Everyone on campus is absolutely safe,” Gomez said, emphasizing that no incidents occurred inside the hospital.
