Funeral honors Provo Fire Captain and family — News

Orem, Utah, USA — July 29, 2026: Hundreds of firefighters, relatives, community members, and youth hockey players gathered Wednesday at Utah Valley University’s UCCU Center to honor Provo Fire Captain Spencer Long, his wife Katrina, and their sons Reid (20), Thayne (13), and Gage (12), who were killed on July 17 when a sudden flash flood swept through the Sunglow Campground near Bicknell in Wayne County. The funeral service, held nearly two weeks after the tragedy, drew firefighters from across Utah and beyond, many of whom lined freeway overpasses and raised a giant American flag between ladder trucks to honor the family. Speakers remembered Captain Long — a 17‑year veteran of Provo Fire & Rescue — as a compassionate, skilled, and deeply dedicated firefighter, mentor, and friend. Family members and colleagues described him as down‑to‑earth, charitable, adventurous, and profoundly committed to serving others. Loved ones also shared tributes to Katrina, co‑founder of Summit Medical Spa, and to the Long children: Reid, recently home from his mission; Thayne, a natural leader and hockey goalie; and Gage, beloved by teammates and friends. Their community described the family as kind, service‑oriented, and full of life. Following the service, five white hearses carrying the Long family were escorted in a solemn emergency‑vehicle procession under the raised American flag as they were guided to their final resting place.
